I don’t really know much about this building. I passed it and found it pretty, but I couldn’t get in the day I was there. According to the website:
Congregation Shearith Israel, the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue in the City of New York, was founded in 1654, the first Jewish congregation to be established in North America. The Congregation has a wealth of archival material and historic artifacts reflecting the American-Jewish experience for almost three and a half centuries.
Shearith Israel was the only Jewish congregation in New York City from 1654 to 1825!
Its Central Park home (definitely not its first) was designed by architect Arnold Brunner in the late nineteenth century in the style of Spanish and Portuguese congregations.
